What Is a Soul Story™?

Every Company Has a Story. Few Know Its Soul.

A company can tell you what it does.

It can tell you how long it has been in business.

It can tell you about its products, services, awards, accomplishments, and people.

But none of those things necessarily tell you why anyone should care.

That's where a Soul Story begins.

Soul Story™ is the story beneath the story.

It's the human truth at the heart of a company—the people, experiences, beliefs, struggles, relationships, and purpose that make it uniquely itself.

We don't invent it.

We discover it.

It Started With a Different Kind of Advertising.

In 2011, LaDot began creating 90-second mini-documentaries we called Soul Stories.

At the time, much of traditional advertising was built around the product.

Show the car.

Show the food.

Show the service.

Tell people why they should buy.

We wondered what would happen if we did the opposite.

What if, instead of immediately showing people what a company sold, we showed them who the company was?

What if we created familiarity before asking for the sale?

What if we let people meet the people behind the business?

That became the foundation of our Soul Stories.

Familiarity Creates Trust.

Think about the businesses you trust.

You probably don't trust them simply because of their logo.

You trust them because you've heard their story.

You've met their people.

You've experienced their values.

You've seen how they treat customers.

You've watched them become part of your community.

That's familiarity.

And familiarity creates something advertising can't buy with a single promotion:

Trust.

A Soul Story uses storytelling to create that familiarity.

It lets people experience the company before they ever become its customer.

A Soul Story Isn't a Commercial.

A commercial asks:

"What can we sell you?"

A Soul Story asks:

"Who are we, and why do we matter?"

That's a fundamentally different conversation.

A Soul Story may feature a founder.

An employee.

A customer.

A family.

A moment in the company's history.

A challenge that nearly changed everything.

A belief that never changed.

The subject isn't the point.

The meaning is.

Finding the Story Beneath the Story

When we begin a Soul Story, we don't start with a script.

We start with questions.

Questions that go beyond the usual.

The answers often reveal something the company itself has stopped seeing because it has been too busy running the business.

That's the Soul Story.

From Soul Story to Brand

The Soul Story isn't simply a film.

It's a foundation.

Once we understand the deeper story, we can build the brand around it.

The message becomes clearer.

The positioning becomes stronger.

The website has something meaningful to say.

Photography has a purpose.

Marketing has a voice.

Employees understand what they represent.

Customers understand why the company is different.

The Soul Story becomes the thread connecting the entire brand.

We've Seen It Work.

With Joe Bullard, we discovered that the story wasn't really about automobiles.

It was about generations of people who built a company and the people carrying that legacy forward.

I Am Joe Bullard.

With Zundel's Jewelry, we discovered that the product wasn't really the story.

It was the feeling behind giving something meaningful.

Only Zundel's Makes It Special.

With RGG Cardiology, we discovered that medicine wasn't the entire story.

It was the human relationship between physicians and patients.

Always Here. Always Caring.

Different companies.

Different industries.

Different stories.

But the same process:

Listen. Discover. Build.

Your Story Is Already There.

You don't need to manufacture a story.

You don't need to become something you're not.

You don't need another marketing slogan.

You need to uncover what is already true.

Because the most powerful brand story isn't the one you make up.

It's the one you discover.

That's a Soul Story™.

And that's where we believe great brands begin.
